Psalm 37:4 “Delight thyself also in the Lord and He shall give thee the desires of thine heart”
How awesome and life giving it is to delight in God! But how is this done?
I kept on wondering, forcing myself to enjoy Christian music when I did not feel joy when I heard it. I didn’t feel like delighting in God at the time nor could I find the strength or the knowledge to delight in God the proper way; not until the Spirit of God came to show me.
“Rejoice in the Words of God” was the instruction God suddenly put in my heart. Immediately my understanding was awaken, remembering it is the Word of God that gives life. Sure, you could read psalm 23 over and over again but it’s not until you delight or rejoice over psalm 23 that you feel something different – as if your soul got up with new life.
All this time I went to hear Christian music because I thought that by doing so I would somehow “delight” in God. The only thing that I was delighting was my flesh while my soul was yet to be revived.
When I began to rejoice and delight in God’s Word, my spirit received life and then was I able to do the things I wanted which I could not do before (such as having joy and doing things with joy for God) because my Spirit had not delighted in God who will give us the desires of our heart.
Don’t go to Christian music first (or whatever media that is Christian themed) to revive your heart/spirit when it is feeling down. It won’t work! “It is the Spirit that gives life; the flesh profits nothing: the words that I speak to you, they are spirit and they are life” (John 6:63). When God gives you life then you will be able to enjoy the song for the glory of God! Amen
I desired to rejoice in God, this was my desire but my soul was not feeling so well and therefore I could not find the strength to fulfill this desire (this lack of strength & life is normal and is an indicator that you need to fill your spirit with the living bread of life – not just by reading the word of God for knowledge but delighting in it and by believing it). I was unable to fulfill my desires until I delighted in God through the rejoicing of His Word. I even began to enjoy the song I was listening to (which I wasn’t enjoying before) because of the new life God put in me.
The key is to go to God’s Word first, either from your heart or going to the Bible, to rejoice/delight in it and then God shall give you new life to do the things you wanted to do for Him (according to His will)
This is why God tells us to seek to do His will and not ours for His will brings life and ours death. Our will says “seek music first and God later” – and then when we obey our will it brought a spiritual death because it produced not what we expected (which was a joy we yearn for and desired), believing a lie that something, a form of media could fill the soul. Only the Lord can bring us such joy when we do His will – and how shall we know His will? Delight in God and He will show you it if you desire to know and do His will!!
A Christian song can encourage you but this only happens when God allows it to. For He is in control of our desires, when they should be fulfilled and how they should be fulfilled. There is a time and a season for everything. God bless you and thank you for reading!
